Power supplies & power banks

Power is still the first thing to fail on a retro console: a tired power brick gets replaced before anything else. This selection brings together EU-plug mains adapters for the Wii, GameCube, PS2 Slim, Xbox 360 Slim and PSP, along with the USB-C power banks intended for gaming on the move.

Voltage, current and polarity: the values to check before buying

A power brick is chosen on numbers, not on the shape of the plug

Each console sets its own voltage and power: the Xbox 360 Slim brick delivers 12 V for 135 W, the PS2 Slim brick covers only the 70000 series, and the Wii power supply runs on 110-220 V with an EU plug. The PSP charger covers the 1000, 2000 and 3000 models. On the move, a 10,000 or 20,000 mAh USB-C power bank extends a session, while a USB-C PD to DC trigger supplies 5 to 28 V and up to 140 W.

A battery's stated capacity is not the capacity it delivers

  • Efficiency: voltage conversion eats part of the charge, so always count on less than the 20,000 mAh stated.
  • Polarity: a 12 V DC connector the wrong way round can damage the board, so check the orientation before plugging in.
  • Travel: lithium batteries travel in the cabin, never in the hold.

What it doesn't do

A power bank does not replace a console's internal battery: it feeds it through the charging port. A generic power brick does not suit every revision of the same machine. And a USB-C PD trigger offers no protection against overvoltage on the console side: you have to set the voltage before making any connection.

Questions fréquentes

10,000 or 20,000 mAh, which capacity should you choose?
The 10,000 mAh model stays light and suits a day's travel with a handheld console. The 20,000 mAh one doubles the runtime but weighs more and takes longer to recharge. In both cases, the capacity actually delivered is lower than the figure stated because of conversion losses.
What is a USB-C PD to DC voltage trigger for?
It lets you power a device that expects a precise DC voltage from a modern USB-C charger. The module on offer covers 5 to 28 V and up to 140 W. You set the voltage you want, then connect the DC output to the console or to your build. Check the value before plugging in; a mistake is destructive.
My old power brick gets very hot, is that normal?
A period brick that is lukewarm in use remains common, but strong heat, a hum or a smell points to capacitors at the end of their life. On machines such as the PS2 Slim or the Xbox 360, replacing it with a brick matching the original voltage is the simplest and least risky solution.
