Buttons & membranes

Buttons and membranes tackle the most common cause of a button that no longer responds: worn plastic or dirty conductive rubber. This page brings together button sets for the Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance, in up to 15 colours, as well as A-B, D-pad and Start conductive rubber pads for the GBA.

Button no longer responding: telling worn plastic from worn rubber

The button or the membrane: two different faults

A button that stays pressed down or clicks without registering is a plastic problem: the replacement set is all you need. A press that only registers when you push hard, on the other hand, comes from the conductive pad, whose carbon layer wears out. The conductive rubber kit for the Game Boy Advance covers A and B, the D-pad and Start.

The colour changes nothing, the model does

The 15 colours listed for the Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance sets only affect the look. What determines compatibility is the model: the GBA set includes the L and R shoulder buttons that the Game Boy Color doesn't have, and the original Game Boy's buttons have their own shape. Fitted to the wrong console, a button rubs or gets stuck.

What it doesn't do

  • No trace repair: if the carbon trace on the board is damaged, a new rubber pad won't restore the contact.
  • No cleaning included: the board contacts must be degreased before fitting new parts.
  • No identical feel: the firmness of a third-party rubber pad may differ slightly from the original part.

Questions fréquentes

Should you change the buttons or the conductive rubber pads?
Go by feel. A button that is stiff, off-centre or cracked needs replacing on the plastic side. A button that moves normally but only registers when you press hard points to a worn conductive pad, which is what the rubber kit is for. If in doubt, both can be changed during a single disassembly.
Does a Game Boy Advance button set fit a Game Boy Color?
No. The GBA set includes the L and R shoulder buttons, which the Game Boy Color doesn't have, and the A/B button profiles are not the same. Each console has its own part, D-pad included. Check the model before ordering; the colour is up to you among the 15 on offer.
Does replacing the buttons require soldering?
No, buttons and rubber pads fit without soldering: they are simply held between the shell and the board. Disassembly does, however, require a tri-wing screwdriver on Game Boy consoles. While it's open, take the opportunity to clean the board contacts with isopropyl alcohol before reassembling.
