Stickers & lenses

Stickers, lenses and technical adhesives cover the parts that close a mod cleanly: the replacement screen lens and frame for the DS Lite, 1.1 mm double-sided VHB foam tape, a 1 mm version on a 3 m roll and the 33 m polyimide tape that protects during soldering.

Modding adhesives: which foam thickness and which heat-resistant tape

1 mm or 1.1 mm: thickness decides the fit

Foam tape fills the gap between an IPS panel and the shell. Too thin and the screen floats, with the lens pressing down on it; too thick and the shell no longer closes. The two references offered here cover the common cases: 1.1 mm VHB for a firm hold on a screen or a battery, 1 mm foam on a 3 m roll for finer shimming.

A mounting adhesive is not a heat-resistant tape

The 33 m polyimide tape is not there to hold a part in place: it insulates and absorbs the heat of an iron or a hot air gun for the time of a solder joint, then comes off without residue. Double-sided foam placed there would melt. Conversely, polyimide will not hold a panel over time: each tape has its own role.

What it doesn't do

  • No free repositioning: VHB grips as soon as it is applied, and peeling it off often damages the surface or the foam.
  • No sealing: these tapes shim and hold, they do not protect against moisture or dust.
  • No universal lens: the one on this page is designed for the DS Lite and comes with its frame.

Questions fréquentes

Which foam thickness should you choose to mount an IPS screen?
It all depends on the gap to fill between the panel and the shell. The 1.1 mm VHB suits a firm hold, including for securing a battery, while the 1 mm foam leaves a little more room when the shell is hard to close. Do a dry fit with the shell closed before removing the protective film.
Can polyimide tape replace double-sided tape?
No, the two roles are distinct. Polyimide is an insulating tape that absorbs the heat of a solder joint and comes off cleanly, but it does not provide the mechanical hold of VHB foam. The 33 m roll is mainly used to mask neighbouring areas during rework or to insulate a wire.
Can the DS Lite screen lens be replaced without taking the console apart?
No. It comes with its plastic frame, which means opening the top half of the console to remove the old one. Plan for a fine Phillips screwdriver and some patience with the clips. Clean double-sided tape is needed for reassembly if the original adhesive was torn off.
