Description complète
Polyimide tape: the area you heat is the only one that gets hot
As soon as a soldering iron or a hot air gun gets near a console, everything around it becomes vulnerable: shell plastic, screen ribbon cable, polarising film, battery wrap. This amber polyimide tape, 0.05 mm thick, withstands reflow and rework temperatures, doesn't melt and then comes off without leaving adhesive on the part.
What it does
- Masks the area to protect: cover the ribbon cable, connector, screen panel or plastic before heating, then remove the tape once the solder has cooled.
- Insulates electrically: the 0.05 mm polyimide film is used to insulate a repaired trace, a jumper wire or the back of a board against a shield.
- Holds a part in place: temporarily holds a ribbon cable, a wire or a module while you solder, without a permanent dab of glue.
- Five widths: 5, 10, 20, 30 or 40 mm, depending on whether you are masking a single pin or the whole back of a board. 33 m roll in every case.
What it doesn't do
- It is not high-voltage insulating tape: it insulates console voltages, not mains.
- It does not protect against direct, prolonged contact with the iron tip — it is a heat screen, not a shield.
- It does not stick durably to a greasy, dusty or silicone-coated surface: degrease with isopropyl alcohol before applying.
- It is not a permanent mounting adhesive: to reattach a screen panel or a battery, you need a dedicated double-sided adhesive.
- One colour only, the original translucent amber of polyimide: don't count on it for a visible cosmetic finish.
Compatibility
Universal workshop tape: it does not depend on any particular console. It is used on the motherboards and ribbon cables of retro handheld consoles (Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, PSP, DS), on home consoles being recapped, on controllers and arcade sticks, as well as on Li-ion batteries and 3D prints. It replaces no original part and is not a substitute for the seals or foam padding fitted by the manufacturer.
Skill level required
No soldering and no tools needed to use it: cut the length you need with scissors or a craft knife and apply. The tape is, however, aimed at people who already open consoles: have the right screwdriver for your machine, an opening spudger and isopropyl alcohol to prepare the surface. Remove the tape while the part is still warm, it peels off more cleanly.

The job: protect before you heat
The critical moment in a repair isn't the soldering itself, it's what happens next to it. A hot air gun warps a shell in a few seconds, a slipping tip marks a polarising film. The workshop reflex is to cover the neighbouring area with polyimide tape before switching anything on. Once the part has cooled, the tape comes off in one piece and the console shows no trace of the work.
The material: why polyimide
Polyimide is the amber film used in electronics because it combines three properties rarely found together: it withstands heat, it insulates electrically and its silicone adhesive comes off without residue. Ordinary sticky tape does two out of three, then melts and leaves a sticky film you have to scrape off. Here, a thickness of 0.05 mm is enough to slide the tape under a shield or between two ribbon cables.
The limit: choosing the right width
A roll that is too wide is hard to cut and wastes material, a roll that is too narrow forces you to apply three overlapping strips. Allow 5 or 10 mm to mask pins and traces, 20 mm for a ribbon cable or a connector, 30 and 40 mm for the back of a board or a battery. And know what this tape is not: neither mains insulation nor permanent mounting adhesive. It is a protective consumable, nothing more.

Frequently Asked Questions
🔥 Up to what temperature does this tape hold?
Polyimide film is designed for soldering and rework operations: it doesn't melt or shrink when exposed to hot air. However, it does not replace a metal shield in the event of direct, prolonged contact with the iron tip.
🧷 Does it leave adhesive behind when you remove it?
No. The silicone adhesive peels off cleanly, especially if you remove the tape while the part is still warm. If any residue remains, a cotton bud soaked in isopropyl alcohol is enough.
🎮 Which consoles can I use it on?
All of them. It is a universal workshop consumable: motherboards, ribbon cables, connectors, shells, controllers, arcade sticks, batteries. It is not tied to any model or revision.
⚡ Is it really electrically insulating?
Yes, for the voltages found in a console: insulating a repaired trace, a jumper wire or the back of a board against a shield. It is not insulating tape approved for household mains wiring.
📏 Which width should I choose?
5 and 10 mm to mask pins and traces, 20 mm for a ribbon cable or a connector, 30 and 40 mm for the back of a board, a shield or a battery. All widths come on a 33 m roll.
📦 What's in the box?
One 33 m roll of amber polyimide tape, 0.05 mm thick, in the width chosen when ordering. No tools are supplied.
🚚 What are the delivery times?
Delivery in 10 to 18 days, ships within 3 to 5 days. French customer service, reply within 1 business day.
🛡️ What guarantee applies?
2-year legal guarantee of conformity. 14-day returns. Listing verified on 19 August 2026.
