Screen ribbon cables & adapters

FFC/FPC ribbon cables and their connectors link the screen, the buttons or a daughterboard to the rest of a console. This page covers the 0.5 mm pitch: a 24-pin ribbon cable available from 25 to 600 mm and flip-lock connectors sold in packs of 50, from 6 to 40 pins, to replace a torn-off port.

FFC or FPC ribbon cable: the three measurements to check before you order

Pitch, pin count, length: the three measurements that matter

The pitch is the distance between two contacts, 0.5 mm for everything on this page. You count the number of pins directly on the ribbon cable, from 6 to 40 depending on the connectors offered, and the 24-pin ribbon cable is available from 25 to 600 mm. Measure the length along the actual route inside the console, not in a straight line.

Contacts on the same side or on opposite sides

An FFC ribbon cable has copper contacts placed either on the same face at both ends, or on opposite faces. Choosing the wrong version gives you a black screen or missing columns, without damaging anything. Also check the connector's locking mechanism, flip-lock or slide-lock, before pressing on the tab: that little clip is the first thing to break.

What it doesn't do

  • No improvised extensions: beyond the length intended by the manufacturer, a video signal can become unstable.
  • No pinout conversion: a ribbon cable won't turn a 24-pin connector into a 30-pin one.
  • No bare-hands fitting on the connector side: replacing a torn-off FPC port requires fine soldering, unlike the ribbon cable alone.

Questions fréquentes

How do you work out the ribbon cable length to order?
Measure the actual route of the ribbon cable inside the console, following the corners and passages, then add a small margin. The 24-pin model on this page is available from 25 to 600 mm, which covers both a short internal link and a remote mounting. If it's too short, the ribbon cable constantly pulls on the connector.
Is a pack of 50 connectors useful for a single repair?
The pack covers several formats from 6 to 40 pins, so you don't have to reorder for every fault. It's mainly worthwhile if you repair regularly: FPC ports tear off easily during disassembly, and having the right pin count in stock saves a console from being out of action for several weeks.
Can you replace an FPC connector without soldering equipment?
No. The ribbon cable can be changed by hand, but the connector is surface-mounted with pins spaced 0.5 mm apart. You need a fine tip or hot air, flux and desoldering braid, plus polyimide tape to protect nearby components while heating.
