Between Linux machines under €100 and Android handhelds over €450, the gap in power — and in price — is huge. The right machine is not the dearest one: it is the one that runs the systems you want to play again.
Up to the PS1, it is all simple
Game Boy, GBA, SNES, Mega Drive, Neo-Geo and PlayStation 1 run perfectly on any machine from €90 up. An Anbernic RG 40XXV, a TrimUI Brick or a Miyoo Mini Plus is plenty, with 5 to 6 hours of battery life and a pocket format.
The PS2 and the GameCube change everything
These two systems need a far more powerful processor, so an Android machine from €330 up. Be wary of listings that promise “the PS2” without saying at what frame rate: on our pages by system, every console carries its real level, smooth or with tweaks.
The firmware counts as much as the hardware
The same console can be mediocre on its stock firmware and excellent under muOS, ArkOS or Knulli. Our compatibility table shows, machine by machine, what is stable and what is still in beta.
And the games?
Our consoles ship blank. No game and no ROM is supplied or installed: that is the law, and it is also what lets us stay in business for the long haul. Our “Where to play legally” page lists the official offers and what French law allows.
