Screwdrivers & bits

Screwdrivers and bits for retro consoles call for drive types that general-purpose tools ignore: tri-wing, gamebit, small Torx. This section is still being built and shows no items at the moment; the disassembly tools already selected are gathered on the neighbouring workshop pages.

Why a retro console almost never opens with an ordinary Phillips screwdriver

Three drive types cover most of the retro line-up

Nintendo used the tri-wing drive, with three blades, on most of its handheld consoles, and the security screw known as gamebit on cartridges and home console shells, in two common sizes of 3.8 and 4.5 mm. More recent machines lean towards Torx and small Phillips. A classic DIY set rarely goes below PH1, which is enough for a piece of furniture and not for a console board.

The real risk is not the size, it is the hardness of the tip

Many cheap bits are too soft for a screw that has been tight for thirty years: the tip rounds off, chews up the drive and turns a ten-minute strip-down into a drilling session. Properly hardened steel and a handle that lets you press straight down the axis count for more than the number of pieces printed on a case.

What it doesn't do

This page offers no screwdriver today: we would rather write that than list a tool we have not selected. The only screwdriver in the catalogue comes as an accessory with the replacement battery for the DS Lite. Beyond that, no bit will save a drive that is already rounded off, and a clipped shell also calls for a flat tool or a suction cup.

Questions fréquentes

Which screwdriver do you need to open a Game Boy?
The drive is a three-blade tri-wing, the same on the Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance. A Phillips does not bite and damages the screw at the first attempt. We do not offer this screwdriver yet; the section will be filled in once a selection is made.
Do you sell screwdrivers today?
No, this page holds no items for the time being and we would rather say so plainly. The only screwdriver in the catalogue is the one supplied with the replacement battery for the DS Lite. For everything else about opening a console, see the disassembly kits and the workshop tools.
Is a hundred-bit case enough for retro gaming?
Rarely as it comes. These cases pile up sizes you will never use and often leave out the 3.8 and 4.5 mm gamebit, which is nevertheless essential for cartridges and home console shells. Check that the tri-wing and the gamebit are there before buying.
