Handheld retro console over €350

Above €350, a handheld retro console is no longer aiming at 16-bit: it goes after the PS2, the GameCube and the 3DS comfortably, with AMOLED screens, Hall effect joysticks and sometimes active cooling. This page brings together the models at that level, from the Retroid Pocket 5 to the AYN Odin 2 Portal.

What you actually pay for above €350 on a retro handheld

Screen, cooling and sticks: the three items that go up

Between €382.99 for the Retroid Pocket 5 and €619.99 for the AYN Odin 2 Portal, the gap rarely comes from the emulated catalogue, which is already very close. It plays out on the panel, AMOLED on the Anbernic RG556 and 7-inch 1080p on the Odin 2 Portal, on the active cooling of the AYN Thor at €614.99, and on the Hall effect joysticks. The format matters too: vertical 4:3 on the RG 477V at €409.99, clamshell on the Retroid Pocket Flip 2 at €413.99.

A higher price doesn't guarantee an extra level

The Anbernic RG476H at €272.99 already announces 3DS, GameCube, PS2 and PSP, as much as far more expensive models on this page. Above €400, you pay for smoothness, battery life, screen and finish, not one more emulated console. Above all, check that the format suits you, because a clamshell or a vertical 4:3 screen is not used like a classic landscape format.

What it doesn't do

  • No game and no ROM is supplied: these consoles are sold without the slightest game content.
  • No perfect emulation: even above €600, some PS2 and 3DS titles call for settings or remain unstable.
  • Not a home console: these machines are handhelds, and TV output depends on the model.

Questions fréquentes

Retroid Pocket 6 or AYN Odin 2 Portal, which one to choose?
The Retroid Pocket 6 at €483.99 remains a compact handheld focused on emulation, up to the PS2 and the 3DS. The AYN Odin 2 Portal at €619.99, with its 7-inch AMOLED panel in 1080p, is aimed at anyone who also wants streaming and demanding Android games, at the cost of a noticeably larger size.
Do Hall effect joysticks really change anything?
Yes, over time. A conventional stick wears through friction and ends up drifting after one to two years of intensive use. A Hall effect stick, found in particular on the AYN Thor at €614.99, measures a magnetic field with no mechanical contact, which removes that cause of failure.
Is an AMOLED screen useful for old games?
Contrast helps above all on dark games, PS1 and PS2 first among them, where blacks stay genuinely black. A heavily pixelated 2D image, on the other hand, gains almost nothing from AMOLED. If your use revolves around 16-bit, the price difference compared with an IPS panel isn't justified.
