Looking for a handheld console for PS2 emulation? God of War, GTA San Andreas, Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shadow of the Colossus… This selection brings together the handhelds in our catalogue that are best equipped to run PS2 games. Let's be clear from the start: the PlayStation 2 is one of the hardest systems to emulate, and compatibility varies from one game to another. This page explains what is really at stake behind the phrase “PS2 emulation”, so you can buy with full knowledge of the facts.
Why emulate the PlayStation 2 on a handheld
With more than 150 million units sold, the PlayStation 2 remains the best-selling console in history, and its game library is one of the richest ever assembled: over 4,000 titles. God of War, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts II, Shadow of the Colossus, Ōkami, Devil May Cry 3, Silent Hill 2, Persona 4, Gran Turismo 4, Ratchet & Clank or Tekken 5: the list is staggering.
A large part of this catalogue has never been re-released on modern platforms, and the original hardware ages badly: worn optical drives, scratched discs, analogue outputs unsuited to today's televisions. An emulation handheld lets you rediscover these games with a sharp image, save states, fast-forward and an entire library in your pocket.
What it takes to emulate the PlayStation 2 well
This is the heart of the matter, and where many sellers stay vague. The PS2's architecture (its Emotion Engine processor and Graphics Synthesizer GPU) is notoriously complex to reproduce. Unlike the PS1 or the PSP, it only runs properly on recent, high-end Android chips. Entry-level processors, perfect for 2D, the PS1 or the Nintendo 64, reach their limits here. It is not a question of settings, but of processor class.
Three things really matter:
- Chip power. The most powerful chips in our selection (Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Dimensity 8300, Snapdragon 865) are the natural home of PS2 emulation. Below that, the experience depends heavily on the title.
- The second analogue stick. The DualShock 2 controller has two sticks, and almost every 3D PS2 game uses one for the camera. A console with a single stick makes those games hard to play: this is a deal-breaker, not a comfort feature.
- Heat dissipation. PS2 emulation puts heavy demands on the processor. Active cooling (fan, heat pipe) helps sustain clock speeds over time. Expect markedly shorter battery life than on lighter systems, and a device that gets warm: that is normal.
Two practical points to know before buying:
- PS2 emulators generally require the BIOS from the original console. This file must be extracted from your own PlayStation 2; it is neither supplied nor legally downloadable.
- The PS2 mostly outputs in 4:3, with a 16:9 mode on part of the catalogue. A 4:3 screen therefore avoids black bars on most games.
Let's be honest: not every PS2 game runs
This is the most important information on this page. PS2 emulation is excellent across a large part of the catalogue and imperfect on the rest:
- many games run very well, sometimes at an increased internal resolution that makes them sharper than on the original hardware;
- some titles show occasional graphical glitches: poorly rendered transparency effects, missing shadows, flickering textures;
- a few games, often the most technically demanding, slow down in certain scenes or fall short of a satisfying frame rate, even on the most powerful machines;
- a small minority of titles remains unplayable or unstable.
The result depends on the game, the emulator and the settings chosen. If one specific title is your only reason to buy, check its compatibility before ordering. No seller, ourselves included, can guarantee a specific game at a specific level of performance.
Which console to choose from our selection
The first real step up
If the PS2 interests you without being your sole priority, the Anbernic RG556 and the Anbernic RG476H are built on the Unisoc T820 chip with 8 GB of RAM and active cooling; the former with a 1080p AMOLED panel, the latter with a 4.7-inch 1280×960 120 Hz screen. The Anbernic RG Slide reuses this base in a slider format, and the Anbernic RG406V in a more compact 4-inch chassis. On this family of chips, count on part of the PS2 catalogue, but not on the heaviest titles.
Versatility and power-to-size ratio
The Retroid Pocket 4 Pro (Dimensity 1100, Mali-G77 MC9 GPU, active cooling) and the Retroid Pocket Flip 2 (Snapdragon 865, 5.5-inch AMOLED screen, clamshell format that protects the panel) move up a level. Both have Hall effect sticks and analogue L2/R2 triggers. The Anbernic RG VITA, with its large IPS screen, is aimed more at players whose priority remains pre-PS2 systems.
High end: the most headroom
This is where PS2 emulation truly comes into its own. The Anbernic RG557 (Dimensity 8300, 12 GB of LPDDR5X RAM, UFS 4.0 storage, Android 14) and the Anbernic RG 477M (same chip, LTPS 4:3 screen, aluminium chassis) are among the most capable configurations. The Anbernic RG 477V offers the same 4:3 philosophy on Android 14 with a 120 Hz, 500-nit screen. On the Retroid side, the Retroid Pocket 5 (Snapdragon 865, 1080p AMOLED) and above all the Retroid Pocket 6 (Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, 6000 mAh) offer the largest power reserve.

Frequently asked questions
Are PS2 games included with the console?
No. Our consoles are sold without commercial games. In France, making a backup copy is tolerated for strictly private use, provided you own the original. So use your own games, or royalty-free content and legally distributed independent productions. We supply neither PS2 games, nor a BIOS, nor any download source.
Which PS2 games run well, and which do not?
A large share of the catalogue runs properly on high-end chips, often with a sharper image than the original. The most technically demanding titles, however, may slow down in certain scenes or show display glitches, and a minority remains unstable. The result depends on the game, the emulator and the settings. Check the compatibility of a specific title before buying.
How do I transfer my games to the console?
You copy your files from a computer to the microSD card, using a card reader or a USB cable depending on the model. PS2 games often weigh several gigabytes: plan for a high-capacity microSD card from a well-known brand. A slow card lengthens loading times and increases the risk of data corruption.
What battery life can I expect with PS2 games?
Considerably less than with lighter retro systems: PS2 emulation pushes both the processor and the GPU hard, and the fan draws power too. The batteries in this selection range from 5000 to 6000 mAh depending on the model. Lowering the brightness and limiting the internal resolution noticeably extends your sessions.
Are my saves kept?
Yes. PS2 emulators recreate a virtual memory card and also offer save states, which freeze the game at the exact moment you stop. These files can be copied to a computer or a cloud service. Export them regularly: a microSD card can fail without warning.
Linux or Android for the PS2?
For the PlayStation 2, the answer is clear: Android. Mature PS2 emulators are developed for that environment, and retro Linux consoles generally use chips designed for older systems. A Linux console remains excellent for 2D and the PS1, but it is not the right architecture if your main goal is the PS2.
Going further
Since the PS2 is a demanding system, it is worth comparing before deciding. Browse all our Android consoles, the full catalogue of handheld consoles, or use our comparison tool to weigh up chips, screen sizes and formats. And don't forget the microSD card: PS2 games are large, and it is the card that will determine the size of your library.
