DreamPSU Rev 2.0: replacing the Dreamcast's original power supply

The internal power supply unit of the Dreamcast has been running on mains power for more than twenty years, and its components are ageing: erratic start-ups, shutdowns, a console that no longer switches on. The DreamPSU Rev 2.0 board, offered here by BitFunx, takes the place of this unit and is powered at 12 V from an external mains adapter.

What it does

• Replaces the internal unit: you remove the original power supply and install the board in its place.
• 12 V input: mains power stays outside the console, in an external adapter.
• Compact format: 48 × 43 mm according to the manufacturer.
• Two options: the board only, or the kit with its additional items shown on the variant image.

What it doesn't do

• It does not repair a GD-ROM drive, a motherboard or a video fault: if the failure does not come from the power supply, the console will not start again.
• The “Board only” variant has no mains adapter: provide a suitable 12 V power supply.
• It is not suitable for any console other than the Dreamcast.

Compatibility

Dreamcast. The console went through several motherboard revisions: send your console's model number to our customer service before ordering. Not covered: other consoles, development kits and derived arcade cabinets.

Skill level required

Intermediate. Unplug the console from the mains and let it rest before opening. You need to remove the cover (screwdriver suited to the Dreamcast's screws), unscrew and disconnect the old unit, install the board and then close it up. Depending on your console, soldering may be necessary: if you do not solder, write to our customer service before ordering.
