Evercade EXP-R: the handheld console that plays Evercade cartridges
The EXP-R is Evercade's handheld console, a revision of the EXP refocused on gaming on the move. It reads Evercade cartridges — more than 600 licensed games spread across more than 60 physical cartridges, according to the manufacturer — on a 4.3-inch IPS screen at 800 × 480. A dedicated button activates TATE mode, which rotates the image for arcade games designed for a vertical screen.
What it does
- Evercade cartridge reader: compatible with the range's library of physical cartridges, each supplied with its colour booklet.
- 4.3-inch IPS screen: 800 × 480 resolution.
- TATE mode: a button rotates the display so you can play vertically the arcade games designed for a vertical screen.
- 3000 mAh battery: 4 to 5 hours of play advertised, recharged over USB-C with the cable provided.
- Built-in Wi-Fi: to install system updates.
- Stereo speakers and 3.5 mm headphone jack: to play with headphones without disturbing anyone.
What it doesn't do
- No built-in games: unlike the EXP, the EXP-R does not carry the 18 Capcom games. Without a cartridge, the console offers no games at all.
- No TV output: the EXP's mini HDMI output has been removed, so the EXP-R connects neither to a television nor to a monitor.
- It reads Evercade cartridges only: no cartridges from other consoles, no game memory card, no downloaded files.
- The console-only version comes without a cartridge.
- Only the USB-C cable is advertised in the box: the mains adapter is not included.
- The two packs do not have the same colour: light grey and red for the console on its own, charcoal and turquoise for the Tomb Raider pack.
- The TATE Grip, which holds the console vertically, is sold separately and is not included.
The two packs
- Console only — light grey, with dark grey and red accents. Supplied without a cartridge.
- With Tomb Raider Collection 1 — charcoal, with turquoise accents. Cartridge no. 40 with Tomb Raider, Tomb Raider II Starring Lara Croft and Tomb Raider III: Adventures of Lara Croft, in their original 32-bit console versions, and its colour booklet.
Compatibility
Evercade cartridges, sold separately; they are the same cartridges as on the VS-R, the EXP and the Super Pocket. Recharging over USB-C, mains adapter not included. No connection to a television or a monitor is possible.
Getting started
Charge the console with the USB-C cable provided, insert an Evercade cartridge and switch on: the cartridge's games appear in the menu. Wi-Fi is set up to receive system updates.
In the box
- 1 Evercade EXP-R console (colour depending on the pack)
- 1 USB-C charging cable
- Tomb Raider pack: 1 Tomb Raider Collection 1 cartridge with colour booklet

A handheld console that plays on cartridges
The EXP-R contains no games: it reads Evercade cartridges, each of which brings together several licensed games with a printed booklet. Arcade, consoles, computers: the library exceeds 600 games across more than 60 cartridges, according to the manufacturer. You build up your collection one cartridge at a time, just like back then.
TATE mode for vertical arcade games
Many arcade games ran on a screen mounted vertically. On the EXP-R, a dedicated button rotates the image on the 4.3-inch IPS screen: you turn the console and the game regains its original orientation. The 3000 mAh battery is advertised at 4 to 5 hours of play, recharged over USB-C.
Two packs, two colours
The console-only version, light grey with red accents, is aimed at those who already own cartridges. The charcoal and turquoise pack adds Tomb Raider Collection 1, the first three episodes in their original console versions. In both cases, no TV output: the EXP-R is played in the hand.
