AYANEO Pocket AIR Mini: the 4:3 screen that puts the classics back in full frame
Most retro handhelds have a 16:9 display. On a Game Boy, NES or SNES game, two wide black bars then eat into the screen. The Pocket AIR Mini does the opposite with a 4.2-inch 4:3 panel at 1280 × 960, the native format of those machines. Behind it, a MediaTek Helio G90T chip running Android 11, and Hall effect sticks.
What it does
- 4:3 with no black bars: the 1280 × 960 resolution allows whole ×4 scaling on the NES and the Game Boy. Each original pixel becomes a crisp square of four pixels, with no interpolation blur.
- Smooth up to the Dreamcast and the PSP: NES, Master System, SNES, Mega Drive, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast and PSP all run at full speed.
- Hall effect sticks and triggers: no contacts rub together, so no stick drift after a few months. Gyroscope and vibration feedback built in.
- 4,500 mAh for 269 g: a comfortable battery in a 165.9 × 82.5 mm ABS shell, with active cooling.
What it doesn't do
- This is not a GameCube or a PS2 machine. The lightest titles get through, with frame drops and, according to reviewers, games that crash or refuse to start. The full library is not playable.
- The Wii, the 3DS, the Wii U, the Switch and PC games are out of reach.
- The PSP runs well, but displays poorly. Its games are 16:9: on a 4:3 panel, the letterboxing is extreme. The power keeps up, the comfort does not.
- The Nintendo DS is played on one screen at a time: AYANEO documents no video output over the USB-C port.
- The Saturn has not been seriously evaluated beyond 2D. We make no claims about its 3D.
- No charger and no screen protector in the box. That is the trade-off AYANEO accepts to hold this price.
- It is supplied without any games. Bare Android 11, with no emulator preinstalled.
Compatibility
Two configurations: 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage, or 3 GB and 64 GB. Storage can be expanded with a microSD card in both cases. The RAM difference shows on the heaviest emulators: if you are aiming at the GameCube or the PS2, even for light titles, take the 3 GB version. For 8-bit and 16-bit, the PS1 and the Game Boy Advance, the 2 GB version is plenty.
When it arrives
The console arrives with bare Android 11. You install your emulators yourself — RetroArch, Duckstation, PPSSPP, Dolphin — and copy your own game files onto a microSD card. No particular technical skill is required, but set aside an evening to get going. Advanced players sometimes install GammaOS, an alternative firmware in place of the original interface.

4:3, and what it really changes
A Game Boy displays in 10:9, a NES in 4:3. On a 16:9 panel, those games take up less than half the screen. Here, the 1280 × 960 resolution allows whole ×4 scaling: an original pixel becomes a crisp square of four pixels, without the interpolation blur of half-measure scaling. Few screens offer that at this price.
What the chip does, and where it stops
The Helio G90T is a 2019 smartphone chip. It handles 8-bit and 16-bit, the PlayStation 1, the Nintendo 64, the Dreamcast and the PSP without effort. Beyond that it reaches its limit: the GameCube and the PS2 only run the lightest titles, with frame drops. The Wii, the 3DS and the Switch are out of reach, and we do not claim otherwise.
What to know before ordering
The box contains the console, a USB-C cable and a manual — no charger, no screen protector. The console arrives with bare Android 11: you install your emulators and copy your own game files. Set aside an evening to get going. And if your main use is the PSP, be aware that its 16:9 games appear letterboxed on this 4:3 screen.

Frequently Asked Questions
🖥️ Why a 4:3 screen rather than 16:9?
Because the NES, the SNES, the Game Boy and arcade cabinets displayed in that format. On a 16:9 panel, those games leave two wide black bars at the sides. Here, they fill the screen. The trade-off: 16:9 games, like most PSP titles, appear letterboxed.
🎮 How far does emulation go, in practice?
Full speed on NES, Master System, SNES, Mega Drive, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast and PSP. The GameCube and the PS2 only run the lightest titles, with frame drops. The Wii, the 3DS, the Wii U and the Switch are out of reach.
💾 2 GB or 3 GB of RAM: which one to choose?
The 2 GB + 32 GB version is enough for 8-bit and 16-bit, the PlayStation 1 and the Game Boy Advance. If you want to attempt the GameCube or the PS2, even on light titles, take the 3 GB + 64 GB: memory is the first thing that limits you on those emulators.
📥 Does the console come with games?
No. It arrives with bare Android 11, with no game and no emulator preinstalled. You install your emulators from the Play Store or as APKs, and you copy your own game files onto a microSD card.
🕹️ Will the sticks drift over time?
The sticks and triggers use Hall effect sensors, with no physical contact that wears down. That is what causes drift on conventional potentiometer sticks. The face buttons and the D-pad, on the other hand, remain membrane-based.
📺 Can the console be connected to a TV?
AYANEO documents no video output over the USB-C port, which is used for charging and data. So we do not claim one. That is also why the Nintendo DS can only be played on one screen at a time.
🚚 What are the delivery times?
Delivery in 10 to 18 days, ships within 3 to 5 days.
🛡️ What guarantee applies?
2-year legal guarantee of conformity. 14-day returns.
Why buy here rather than on a marketplace
It is a fair question. Here is the answer, straight.
Every listing is checked before publication: chip, screen, systems actually emulated, condition on delivery. Many models that come out never make it into the catalogue.
A question, a firmware problem, a return: you write, a human replies within 1 business day. In French.
The 2-year legal warranty of conformity is handled by us — not by a form on the other side of the world. And 14 days to change your mind, with no need to justify yourself.
We do not claim to be the cheapest. We claim that you will know exactly what you are buying before you pay.
