WH148 potentiometers: restore smooth adjustment to a scratchy volume control
On an arcade cabinet, a cabinet amplifier or a home-made control panel, a control that crackles or no longer holds its position is almost always a worn rotary potentiometer. The WH148 is the most common reference for this kind of replacement: 15 mm shaft, 3 solder pins, panel mounting. Sold in packs of 10 in a single value, the one you choose.
What it does
- Replaces a panel potentiometer: standard WH148 format, 15 mm knurled shaft, rotary carbon-film body.
- Wires up at three points: 3 solder pins, with no socket or proprietary connector.
- Supplied ready to mount: mounting nuts and washers are included with the components.
- Pack of 10 in a single value: enough to fit out an entire panel or keep spare parts in stock.
What it doesn't do
- This is not an assortment: each pack contains 10 units of the single value selected, not a set of different values.
- The track is linear, not logarithmic. On an audio volume control, the progression will feel uneven: for sound, a logarithmic track is more comfortable.
- Does not replace the original volume wheel of a handheld console (Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, PSP): those parts are miniature and a completely different format.
- No knob or shaft cap is included — reuse the one from the old potentiometer or order one separately.
- The manufacturer discloses neither a precise power rating nor a resistance tolerance: don't use them in a circuit where these values are critical.
Compatibility
Suitable for any build that accepts a 3-pin WH148 rotary potentiometer: arcade machines and cabinets, amplifier volume stages, control panels and DIY enclosures, audio modules. Before ordering, note the value in ohms of the original part and check the panel's hole diameter. Not suitable for slide potentiometers, rotary encoders, surface-mount (SMD) potentiometers or PCB trimmers.
Skill level required
Soldering required: three pins to desolder on the old part, three to solder on the new one. A fine-tip iron, solder, desoldering braid and a screwdriver for the mounting nut are all you need. Allow about ten minutes per potentiometer once the panel is open. If you've never desoldered a through-hole component, practise on a salvage board first.

The job: restoring a clean adjustment
A potentiometer that crackles, a volume that jumps as soon as you brush the knob, a control that only responds over half of its travel: the carbon track has worn, and no amount of cleaning brings it back for good. The replacement takes about ten minutes once the panel is open. Three pins to desolder, three to solder, the nut to tighten, and the control regains continuous travel from minimum to maximum.
The part: why the WH148
The WH148 is the most widespread rotary potentiometer in panel builds: 15 mm knurled shaft, three solder pins, carbon-film body. That's why you find it in arcade machines, amplifier volume stages and home-made enclosures. Here, it's sold in packs of 10 in a single value: from 1 kΩ to 1 MΩ, you choose the one that matches the original part.
The limitation to know before buying
These potentiometers have a linear taper. On a voltage, brightness or sensitivity control, that's exactly what you need. On an audio volume control, your ear will perceive an uneven progression, concentrated at the start of the travel: that's what a logarithmic track is for. And they don't replace the volume wheel of a handheld console, which is a much smaller format. Note the value in ohms of the original part before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions
🔧 Do I need to solder to install these potentiometers?
Yes. Three through-hole pins to desolder on the old part, three to solder on the new one. A fine-tip iron, solder and desoldering braid are all you need.
🎮 What builds can I use them in?
In any build that accepts a 3-pin WH148 rotary potentiometer: arcade machine, amplifier volume stage, control panel or DIY enclosure. They aren't suitable for slide potentiometers, rotary encoders or SMD models.
🔢 Does the pack contain several different values?
No. Each pack contains 10 potentiometers of the single value selected, from 1 kΩ to 1 MΩ. It isn't an assortment.
🔊 Are they suitable for an audio volume control?
The track is linear: the progression will sound uneven, concentrated at the start of the travel. For volume, a logarithmic track remains more comfortable.
