WavePhoenix receiver: bringing a WaveBird controller back to life without its receiver
The WaveBird wireless controller is often found on its own: its original receiver has been lost. WavePhoenix is an open source receiver that plugs into a controller port of the GameCube or of a Wii with GameCube ports, and reimplements the WaveBird's radio protocol to make it work again.
What it does
- For the original WaveBird controller: the firmware reproduces the WaveBird's radio protocol.
- One-button pairing: a button on the receiver replaces the channel dial of the original.
- Open source firmware: the WavePhoenix project provides for receiver updates via Bluetooth.
- Five colours: mint green, orange, blue, white or grey.
What it doesn't do
- The WaveBird controller is not included: this is the receiver only.
- It only works with the WaveBird: neither wired GameCube controllers nor wireless controllers from other brands.
- It does not plug into the Wii Family Edition, Wii mini, Wii U or Switch, which have no GameCube controller port.
- It does not add rumble: the WaveBird never had any.
Compatibility
GameCube, all models, and the first-model Wii (RVL-001) with its GameCube controller ports. Not compatible with the Wii Family Edition, Wii mini, Wii U and Switch. Connection to a GameCube-to-USB adapter is not covered.
Skill level required
None: no disassembly or soldering. You plug the receiver into a controller port, then pair it with the controller using its button.
