Description complète
Tip cleaner: a clean tip without cooling down the iron
In the middle of a motherboard recap or an IPS screen install, the tip gets coated in oxide and the solder stops flowing. A wet sponge, on the other hand, drops the temperature by more than a hundred degrees with every wipe and wears out the coating. This metal wire ball cleans dry: dip the tip in, pull it out, and the iron is still at temperature.
What it does
- Dry cleaning: the metal wire scrapes off oxide and excess solder without thermal shock, unlike a damp sponge.
- Contained residue: solder shavings fall into the metal base instead of ending up on the workbench or the board.
- Replaceable ball: when the wire is saturated with solder, you replace the ball and keep the base.
- No consumables: no water to change, no sponge to dampen before each session.
What it doesn't do
- It doesn't desolder anything. The supplier's original title mentions “desoldering”: that's wrong. To remove solder, you need a desoldering pump or wick.
- It doesn't restore a tip that has already turned black. If the coating no longer takes solder, you need a tip tinner, not a cleaner.
- It doesn't replace flux or solder, and doesn't clean a hot air station nozzle.
- The metal wire wears out: it becomes saturated with solder and is replaced like a consumable.
- Rubbing too hard scratches the coating of a low-end tip — dip, don't scrape.
Compatibility
A passive accessory, independent of the iron's brand and wattage: it suits soldering irons with fine, conical or chisel tips, adjustable-temperature stations and cordless battery-powered irons. No connection, no electronics. However, it isn't designed for hot air nozzles or engraving tips.
Skill level required
None. The accessory sits on the workbench and is ready to use straight away: dip the hot tip into the ball, move it back and forth twice, and re-tin with a little fresh solder before putting the iron back. Remember to empty the base when shavings build up.
In the box
- 1 metal wire cleaning ball.

It's not the iron, it's the tip
A soldering iron that no longer wets is almost never the iron's fault: it's the tip, covered in a black layer of oxide that stops the solder from taking. On a retro console, it's those extra seconds spent pressing on a pad that lift a trace. Cleaning every two or three joints is enough to keep a tip shiny from the start to the end of a recap.
Metal wire rather than a sponge
The wet sponge used to be the default workshop solution, but it abruptly cools the tip with every wipe, and these cycles wear out the tinning. Metal wire works dry: the tip stays at temperature, you keep going without waiting for it to heat back up, and solder residue falls into the base instead of ending up on the board.
What you'll need alongside it
It's a workshop tool, not a miracle one. It cleans, it doesn't repair: a tip already blackened down to the copper needs a tip tinner, and removing solder from a board needs a pump or wick. The ball itself is a consumable that becomes saturated over time — the metal base, on the other hand, is kept.

Frequently Asked Questions
🔧 What is this cleaning ball for?
For dry-cleaning a soldering iron tip: the metal wire removes oxide and excess solder without dropping the iron's temperature.
💧 Why not a wet sponge?
A wet sponge cools the tip by more than a hundred degrees with every wipe. These thermal cycles wear out the coating and lengthen the heat-up time between joints.
🎮 Is it compatible with my soldering iron?
Yes. It's a passive accessory with no connection: it suits all standard tips, fine, conical or chisel, on a basic iron, an adjustable station or a cordless iron.
🧲 Does it desolder a component?
No. The supplier's original label wrongly mentions desoldering. To remove solder from a board, you need a desoldering pump or desoldering wick.
📦 What's in the box?
A metal wire cleaning ball, and a metal base depending on the variant chosen. The supplier's three variants differ in the shape of the base.
♻️ Does the ball wear out?
Yes, it's a consumable. The wire becomes saturated with solder over months of use: you then replace the ball and keep the metal base.
🚚 What are the delivery times?
Delivery in 10 to 18 days, ships within 3 to 5 days.
🛡️ What warranty applies?
2-year legal guarantee of conformity. 14-day returns. French customer service, reply within 1 business day.
