BitFunx shell for the US SNES: replacing a yellowed or broken housing
The plastic of US SNES consoles yellows over time, and the mounting tabs eventually break. This BitFunx replacement shell reproduces the format of the US version SNES in translucent or matte colours: you transfer your console's motherboard into it, without soldering.
What it does
- New housing: replaces a yellowed, scratched housing or one with broken mounts.
- Seven finishes: clear, clear red, clear grey, clear purple and clear black, matte clear black and matte grey.
- No-solder transfer: the motherboard and internal parts move from one shell to the other with a screwdriver.
What it doesn't do
- This is not a console. Motherboard, shielding, power supply and cartridge slot come from your SNES.
- It is not suitable for European SNES consoles or the Super Famicom, whose rounded housing has a different shape.
- It does not fix any electronic fault: a console that does not start will not start again with a new shell.
- On the clear colours, the metal shielding and the inside of the console remain visible.
Compatibility
US version SNES (model SNS-001, angular housing). Not compatible with the European SNES, the Japanese Super Famicom or the SNES "Jr." (SNS-101) released in 1997, which have different housings.
Skill level required
Intermediate level, no soldering. The SNES opens with a 3.8 mm security screwdriver ("gamebit" bit), then a Phillips screwdriver for the motherboard and shielding. You transfer the internal parts into the new shell and reassemble. Keep the screws and small parts from the original shell: they may be needed for reassembly.

The job: a new housing for a vintage SNES
A US SNES that has spent thirty years in the sun has often turned yellow, and its mounting tabs have given way. You open the console with the security screwdriver, transfer the motherboard and shielding into the new shell, and close it up. The console works as before, in a housing that shows off its electronics.
The part: a BitFunx shell in the US format
BitFunx is a maker known to retro console fans for its converters and replacement shells. This one reproduces the angular housing of the SNES sold in North America, in seven translucent or matte finishes. It does not fit the rounded housing of European SNES and Super Famicom consoles.

No. This shell reproduces the angular housing of the US SNES (SNS-001). The European SNES and the Super Famicom have a rounded housing of a different shape, and the 1997 SNES "Jr." a more compact housing.
