Replacement speaker: the sound comes back, without the crackle
On a thirty-year-old console, the sound goes before the screen does. The cone warps, the coil absorbs moisture, and all that is left is a muffled hiss. This replacement speaker is chosen by impedance and diameter, to restore the original sound level on a handheld, a home console or a DIY project. Sold in pairs.
What it does
- Three impedances: 8 Ω, 16 Ω or 32 Ω, to be chosen according to what is marked on the original speaker or on the board schematic.
- Seven diameters: 20, 21, 23, 27, 29, 36 and 40 mm, to fit the existing housing without modifying the shell.
- Sold in pairs: a spare part in reserve, or both channels of a stereo console restored in a single order.
What it doesn't do
- It does not increase the volume: the power is determined by the console's amplifier, not by the speaker.
- It does not fix distorted sound caused by a worn capacitor, a dirty potentiometer or a broken trace.
- No list of compatible consoles is provided: it is up to you to note the diameter and impedance of the original part before ordering.
- The wires are not pre-soldered to a ribbon cable: you need to resolder the two original wires.
- This is not a powered speaker: no battery, no Bluetooth, no enclosure.
Compatibility
Compatibility comes down to two figures, not a console name: the impedance (8, 16 or 32 Ω) and the diameter (20 to 40 mm). Measure the original speaker with a calliper and read the impedance printed on the magnet or in the machine's schematic. An impedance lower than the original makes the audio stage run hot: do not go below the original value. These speakers are also suitable for audio modules, salvaged amplifiers and DIY projects up to 0.5 W.
Skill level required
Opening the shell and soldering two wires. A 30 to 40 W soldering iron, solder, desoldering braid and a screwdriver suited to your console (Phillips, tri-wing or Torx depending on the machine) are all you need. Allow twenty to thirty minutes the first time. Whether it is glued or clipped in depends on the original housing: plan a dab of glue if the original part was glued.

Sound is the first thing to go
On a console that has spent thirty years in a box, the screen often holds up better than the sound. The cone caves in, the coil glue dries out, and moisture does the rest. The result is always the same: a muffled hiss, a crackle in the bass, volume that cuts out when you shake the machine. The speaker is a wear part, not a fragile electronic component — and that is good news, because it can be replaced.
Two figures, not a console name
You don't choose a speaker by the name of the machine but by impedance and diameter. The impedance — 8, 16 or 32 Ω — must be at least equal to that of the original part, otherwise the audio stage will run hot. The diameter, from 20 to 40 mm, must fit the existing housing so that no cutting of the shell is needed. Note these two values on the old part before ordering: it is the only check that matters.
What a new speaker won't fix
A new speaker gives clean sound, not louder sound: the power comes from the console's amplifier. If the sound is still distorted after the replacement, the cause lies elsewhere — capacitors to recap, a dirty volume potentiometer, a broken trace. And nothing is pre-wired here: you have to desolder the two original wires and solder them back on. Twenty to thirty minutes of work, a soldering iron, no fine electronics.
