Precision side cutters: the lead drops off flush with the board

After soldering, there's always a bit of lead sticking out. On a console motherboard, that stub catches on the shell, touches a ribbon cable or rubs against a battery. These flush-cut cutters snip the lead level with the joint, with a slim nose that fits between components. They're also handy for mod wiring and for cleaning up 3D print supports.

What it does

  • Flush cut: one face of the blade stays flat, so the lead is cut as close to the solder as possible instead of leaving a two-millimetre stub.
  • Slim nose: the tip fits between tightly packed components, where an electrician's side cutters won't go.
  • Three workbench uses: through-hole component leads, flexible hook-up wire for a screen or battery mod, supports and sprues from a 3D print.
  • No learning curve: a hand tool, no power supply or adjustment, usable from your very first teardown.

What it doesn't do

  • Doesn't cut hard metals. Steel wire, piano wire, springs, nails: the blade chips and the tool is ruined. It's made for copper, solder and component leads.
  • Doesn't strip wires. It cuts the insulation and the conductor together: to prepare a wire, you need wire strippers.
  • Isn't a cable cutter. For anything thicker than thin hook-up wire, use heavy-duty cutters.
  • The handles are not insulated for live work. Always cut on an unplugged device.
  • The supplier doesn't state the maximum cutting capacity, the exact blade material or the hardness. We don't make them up.

Compatibility

No model restrictions: it's a workbench tool, not a spare part. It goes with any open-heart job — Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, DS, PSP, PS1, PS2, Dreamcast, Anbernic, Miyoo or TrimUI handheld consoles, controllers, PC boards and Raspberry Pi. It doesn't plug into anything and doesn't fit inside any console.

Skill level required

Beginners welcome. Always cut after soldering, never before, and hold the offcut with a finger or fine tweezers: a snipped lead flies off fast and can reach an eye — safety glasses remain good practice. Work on an unplugged device, with capacitors discharged on a home console. Alongside these cutters, keep a soldering iron, desoldering braid and the right screwdriver for your device.

The millimetre that stops the shell from closing

The mod is finished, the IPS screen lights up, the battery holds. Then the shell refuses to clip shut, or the ribbon cable gets marked at the exact spot where a capacitor lead is still sticking out. On a Game Boy or PS1 board, the space between the circuit and the plastic is measured in fractions of a millimetre. Ordinary side cutters leave a stub; flush cutters don't.

One flat blade face — that's the whole idea

Standard side cutters have two bevels: they pinch the metal from both sides and leave a point. Here, one face stays flat, you rest it against the board and the cut is made flush with the solder joint. The nose is also narrower, so you can target a lead between two components without disturbing its neighbours. It's a precision tool, not a force tool: that's exactly what makes it useful on a console board.

What it won't cut

Thin blades get damaged quickly. Steel wire, piano wire, a spring or a nail leave a permanent notch from the very first cut: keep them for copper, solder, flexible hook-up wire and 3D printing plastic. They don't strip wires either, and the handles are not insulated for live work. The supplier publishes neither cutting capacity nor blade hardness: we'd rather say so than quote a made-up figure.

Frequently Asked Questions

✂️ What exactly is a flush cut?

One face of the blade stays flat. Rested against the circuit board, it cuts the lead level with the solder joint, without leaving the one- or two-millimetre stub you get with standard side cutters.

⚙️ Can it cut steel wire or piano wire?

No. These are thin blades, made for soft metals: copper, solder, component leads. Steel wire, a spring or a nail leave a permanent notch from the very first cut.

🔌 Does it strip wires?

No. It cuts the insulation and the conductor together. To prepare hook-up wire, you need wire strippers; these cutters come in afterwards, to trim neatly.

🎮 Is it compatible with my console?

With all of them. It's a workbench tool, not a spare part: it doesn't fit inside any device. It's useful whenever you solder or wire — Game Boy, GBA, PS1, PSP, Dreamcast, Anbernic or Miyoo handhelds, controllers, PC boards.

📦 What's in the box?

1 pair of precision side cutters. The supplier doesn't list anything else, so we don't promise a case or a blade cap.

🧰 What precautions should I take when cutting?

Work on an unplugged device, with capacitors discharged on a home console. Hold the offcut with a finger or fine tweezers: a snipped lead flies off fast. Safety glasses remain good practice.

🚚 What are the delivery times?

Delivery in 10 to 18 days, ships within 3 to 5 days.

🛡️ Which guarantee applies?

2-year legal guarantee of conformity. 14-day returns. French customer service, reply within 1 business day.
