Internal HDMI kit for Mega Drive 2: an HDMI port built right into the console

Connected via composite to a flat screen, the Mega Drive 2 displays a blurry, smeared picture. This Hispeedido internal HDMI kit is soldered inside the console and gives it a 1080p HDMI output, adjustable from an OSD menu, with a choice between 4:3 and 16:9. It is intended for the Mega Drive 2 only.

What it does

• 1080p HDMI output: the console connects to a modern TV with a simple HDMI cable.
• OSD menu: three video modes (soft, standard, vivid) and eight colour modes.
• Three picture formats: including the original 4:3 and 16:9.

What it doesn't do

• It cannot be installed without soldering: the board and its wires are soldered onto the motherboard.
• It is not suitable for the first Mega Drive or other derived models.
• It adds no detail to games: 1080p is an upscale of the original image.
• No printed manual is supplied: the installation guide is available on request from our customer service.

Compatibility

Mega Drive 2 with a VA0, VA1, VA1.8, VA2.3 or VA3 motherboard, according to the manufacturer. On a European (PAL) console, a solder bridge between two pads on the kit's board enables PAL mode. Not compatible with the first Mega Drive, the portable Mega Drive or other derived versions.

Skill level required

Advanced. You need to open the Mega Drive 2 (Phillips screwdriver), solder the board and its wires onto the motherboard according to the guide for your revision, make the PAL bridge if needed, then check with a multimeter that there is no short circuit. Depending on where you place the HDMI port, cutting the shell may be necessary. Check your installation before closing it up: once soldered, the kit is no longer in its original condition.
