Backlit LCD screen kit: a Game Boy DMG you can read without a lamp

The original Game Boy DMG screen is reflective: without a good light source, the picture disappears. This kit replaces the panel with a backlit LCD screen kept in the original size, with the machine's greyscale rendering. Depending on the variant, it comes on its own, with a front lens or with a complete shell.

What it does

• Backlight: the screen stays readable indoors and in the evening, without an extra lamp or an illuminated magnifier.
• Original size: the panel matches the size of the factory screen, the picture is neither enlarged nor cropped in the shell window.
• Greyscale rendering: the display stays true to the spirit of the original model, with no colour conversion.
• Choice of finish: screen only, screen with a tinted front lens, or screen with a complete shell depending on the variant selected.

What it doesn't do

• It does not increase the resolution: the console displays 160 × 144 pixels, the kit changes the lighting and readability, not the resolution.
• It does not turn the console into a colour one: the panel is greyscale, there are no colour palettes to select.
• It does not repair a faulty console: power supply, sound, cartridge slot and save battery are not affected by this kit.
• We do not claim a "solder-free" installation: the manufacturer does not document this point clearly, so keep a soldering iron handy just in case.
• No console, games or tools included. Supplied without games, in compliance with the law.

Compatibility

Designed for the original Game Boy, DMG model (the big grey model from 1989). Not suitable for the Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Light, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance or Advance SP: their panels and shells are different. The "shell" variants replace the complete DMG shell, the "lens" variants only replace the front glass.

Skill level required

Intermediate. The console must be fully disassembled: a 3.8 mm tri-wing screwdriver is essential for the shell screws, plus a Phillips screwdriver for the board and a thin spudger to separate the two halves of the shell. The screen ribbon cable is fragile: work on a clear surface, without forcing. If you have never opened a console, start with a complete tool kit before getting started.
