IPS screen kit for Game Boy DMG: a green 1989 screen replaced by a readable panel
The original Game Boy DMG-01 screen has no backlight at all: without a lamp over your shoulder, you can't see a thing. This kit replaces the entire display assembly with a 2.6-inch IPS panel, run by a dedicated driver board, with its ribbon cable and front lens. The console keeps its original motherboard, buttons and sound.
What it does
- 2.6-inch IPS panel: same diagonal as the original screen, wide viewing angles and a picture you can read indoors without an extra lamp.
- Driver board included: the kit is complete — panel, board, flat ribbon cable and front lens are supplied together, not pieced together from three separate listings.
- Original console retained: motherboard, buttons, speaker and cartridges remain those of your console. It is a display replacement, not a new console.
What it doesn't do
- It does not fit an original shell without modification. You need to enlarge the screen window, shave down screw posts and rework the contrast wheel recess. Plan for a pre-cut shell if you don't want to file.
- Soldering is still required with this type of kit, at least for the speaker. This is not an installation you can do without a soldering iron.
- Game Boy DMG-01 only. Not the Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Light, Game Boy Color or Game Boy Advance.
- It does not add a rechargeable battery, a USB-C port or improved sound. Those are three separate mods.
- An IPS panel draws more power than the original screen: battery life on four AA batteries drops, and the motherboard's background hiss becomes slightly more audible through headphones.
- Supplied without games, in compliance with the law.
- Not taken back once fitted. Do a dry fit with the console open before cutting anything.
Compatibility
Original Game Boy, model DMG-01. The 2.6-inch diagonal matches the screen of this console. Original shell: can be fitted after cutting. Pre-cut "IPS ready" shell: fits without cutting.
What is not covered: Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Light, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Advance SP. These models have their own kits, with other diagonals and other ribbon cables.
Skill level required
Advanced. Full teardown, cutting the shell with a file or rotary tool, soldering the speaker, centring the panel and gluing the lens. Tools: Y1 tri-wing and #00 Phillips screwdrivers, plastic spudger, needle files or rotary tool, soldering iron and flux, isopropyl alcohol, precision double-sided tape. Allow a good hour and a half for a first installation.

The job: opening a 1989 console and giving it a picture back
You undo the six tri-wing screws, lift out the motherboard, remove the old display assembly and its silicone ribbon cable — the very one that causes missing lines as it ages. In their place go an IPS panel, its driver board and its flat ribbon cable. The original green disappears, while the console remains entirely vintage.
The part: why the diagonal matters
IPS kits for the DMG come in two schools: those that keep the original display area, and those that enlarge it to fill the whole window. The latter require a specific lens and a centring bracket sold separately. This panel is listed at 2.6 inches, the diagonal of the original screen, and its lens is included.
The support: tools, shell and customer service
Installation requires a Y1 tri-wing, a #00 Phillips, a soldering iron and something to file with. A pre-cut shell avoids the cutting and saves you an hour. On the shop side: French customer service, reply within 1 business day, a 2-year legal guarantee of conformity and 14 days to change your mind, as long as the kit has not been fitted.

Frequently Asked Questions
🔧 Do I need to solder to install this kit?
Yes, at least the speaker, which has to be moved or rewired with this type of installation. A 30 to 60 W soldering iron and flux are enough. This is not a solder-free kit.
🎮 Which consoles is it compatible with?
The original Game Boy, model DMG-01, only. Not the Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Light, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance or Advance SP: these models have their own kits, with other diagonals and other ribbon cables.
✂️ Do I need to cut the shell?
Yes, on an original shell: you need to enlarge the screen window, shave down screw posts and rework the contrast wheel recess. On a pre-cut "IPS ready" shell, no cutting is needed.
🔋 Does it use more power?
Yes. An IPS panel draws more than the original screen: battery life on four AA batteries drops, and the motherboard's background hiss becomes slightly more audible through headphones. That is the price of a readable picture.
📦 What's in the box?
A 2.6-inch IPS panel mounted in its bracket, a driver board, a flat connecting ribbon cable and a front lens. No shell, speaker, tools or batteries.
🧰 What tools do I need?
Y1 tri-wing and #00 Phillips screwdrivers, plastic spudger, needle files or rotary tool, soldering iron and flux, isopropyl alcohol, precision double-sided tape. Our tool kits in the Workshop & Modding section cover everything.
⏱️ How long does installation take?
A good hour and a half for a first installation, cutting included. The tricky part is not the electronics but the shell: a botched cut cannot be undone. Dry-fit the kit with the console open before filing anything.
🛡️ What guarantee applies?
2-year legal guarantee of conformity. 14-day returns as long as the kit has not been fitted. French customer service, reply within 1 business day.

The 2-year legal warranty of conformity is handled by us — not by a form on the other side of the world. And 14 days to change your mind, with no need to justify yourself.
We do not claim to be the cheapest. We claim that you will know exactly what you are buying before you pay.
