Transflective screen for Game Boy Color: readable in the sun as well as in the dark

A conventional IPS panel fades in full sunlight; the original screen of the Game Boy Color, on the other hand, disappears in the shade. This transflective screen (semi-reflective) of 2.78" combines both principles: it reflects ambient light like the original screen and has backlighting for dark rooms. The look stays close to that of the original console.

What it does

• Transflective: ambient light is reflected, so the image stays readable in full sunlight.
• Backlit: the image stays visible indoors and in the dark.
• Large format: 2.78" diagonal, for a larger image than the original.
• Eight finishes: white, grey, transparent, translucent purple, translucent black, dark grey glass lens, white glass lens, black without logo.

What it doesn't do

• It does not have the contrast of an IPS panel in the dark: that is the price of its readability in the sun.
• Larger than the original screen, it does not fit into an original shell window without adaptation.
• The backlighting uses more power: battery life is shorter than with the original screen.
• It is only suitable for the Game Boy Color: not the classic Game Boy, the Pocket or the Advance.

Skill level required

Intermediate to advanced. Opening the console with a tri-wing screwdriver, removing the original screen, fitting the panel and its ribbon cable, reassembling in a shell and lens suited to the 2.78" format. Have a plastic spudger and a fine-tip soldering iron ready in case a connection needs to be redone on your board. Allow one to two hours for a first installation.
