Laminated AMOLED screen for Game Boy Color: deep blacks and a menu at your fingertip
The original Game Boy Color screen is not backlit and its colours look washed out. This Hispeedido kit replaces it with an AMOLED panel laminated to its glass: each pixel emits its own light, for deep blacks and strong contrast. Settings are handled through a touch OSD menu, without touching the game buttons.
What it does
- AMOLED panel: self-emissive pixels, deep blacks, readable in the dark as well as in broad daylight.
- Laminated screen: the panel is bonded to its glass, with no air gap for dust to settle in.
- Touch OSD menu: a long press on the touch area opens the menu, a swipe of the finger scrolls through the settings.
- Picture settings: brightness, colour modes, retro pixel effects and frame blending are selected on screen.
What it doesn't do
- It does not fit into an original shell without work. You need a Game Boy Color shell pre-cut for a laminated screen: cutting an original shell to the right dimensions is very tricky.
- It is not entirely solder-free: one power wire has to be soldered to the motherboard.
- Games keep the Game Boy Color's resolution: the picture is enlarged, not redrawn.
- It does not change the sound. The screen draws more power than the original unlit one: battery life on AA batteries drops, especially at high brightness.
Compatibility
Game Boy Color (CGB-001) only. Not suitable for the original Game Boy, the Game Boy Pocket or the Game Boy Advance, which have different screens and shells.
Skill level required
Intermediate to advanced level. You need to open the console (tri-wing and Phillips screwdrivers), remove the original screen, connect the kit's ribbon cable, then solder a power wire to a very small point on the motherboard: a fine-tip soldering iron and a magnifier are recommended. Final assembly is done in a shell pre-cut for a laminated screen.

The job: making a Game Boy Color shine
On an original Game Boy Color, the colours are dull and the screen disappears in dim light. You open the console, remove the old screen, connect the kit and solder a single power wire. In a pre-cut shell, the console then displays deep blacks and vivid colours.
