An SP battery is more than twenty years old. Even when well stored, a lithium cell loses most of its capacity: the console lasts an hour, or only starts when plugged in. This 3.7 V 850 mAh battery is in the original AGS-003 format — it slides into the compartment with no modification.

A lithium battery ages even when it isn't used: the electrolyte degrades and the capacity dwindles. A second-hand SP rarely lasts more than an hour, and many only start when plugged in. It's not the console that's worn out, it's the battery — and that's the easiest part to change.
