Game Boy Advance IPS V5 screen and HDMI dock: handheld or on the TV

The original Game Boy Advance has a dark screen and no video output. This Hispeedido kit replaces the screen with a backlit 720 × 480 IPS and adds an HDMI station: placed on the dock, the console is displayed on the TV and controlled with a Bluetooth controller. It is aimed at modders comfortable with soldering.

What it does

• 720 × 480 IPS screen: each console pixel is displayed as a 3 × 3 pixel square, with no interpolation blur; stated viewing angle of 178°.
• On-screen menu: 15 brightness levels, 8 colour modes and four display effects (normal, retro pixel, scanlines 1 and 2).
• HDMI dock: stated output of 720p; picture, power and controls all go through a single USB-C link.
• Wireless controllers: on the dock, supports PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox One S, Xbox Series X|S, Wiimote, Wii U Pro, Switch Pro and Joy-Con Bluetooth controllers, as well as Super Nintendo and NES Mini style controllers.
• Batteries in place: a protection circuit lets you put the console on the dock without removing the batteries.

What it doesn't do

• It includes neither the console nor the controller.
• It does not output 1080p: the dock is stated at 720p, and the TV handles the rest.
• It is not suitable for the Game Boy Advance SP, the Game Boy Micro or the Game Boy Color.
• The IPS V5 screen fits without modification in a shell designed for it; in the original shell, internal adjustments are to be expected.
• Installation requires soldering on the motherboard: this is not a beginner's kit.

Compatibility

Original-model Game Boy Advance, 32-pin or 40-pin motherboard (both ribbon cables are supplied). Not compatible with the Game Boy Advance SP, the Game Boy Micro or the Game Boy Color.

Skill level required

Advanced level. Complete disassembly of the console (2 screwdrivers supplied), fitting the screen and its board, connection by ribbon cable, soldering wires onto the motherboard. An IPS-compatible shell avoids adjustments; in the original shell, plan to trim the inside. A fine-tip soldering iron and flux are essential.
