Dalle IPS 2,9 pouces au format d'origine pour Game Boy Advance, vue de face allumée
Description complète

2.9-inch IPS screen for Game Boy Advance: the console becomes readable again without a desk lamp

The reflective panel of the 2001 Game Boy Advance needs a well-placed light source for you to make anything out. This kit replaces that panel with a backlit 2.9-inch IPS screen in the original size, with a pixel mode that recreates the grid of the period panel. This is a modding part: it goes inside the console, not on top of it.

What it does

  • IPS backlight: brightness, contrast and viewing angles in a different league from the original reflective AGB-001 panel.
  • Original size: the 2.9-inch panel matches the dimensions of the factory screen, so the shell does not need to be enlarged to fit it.
  • Pixel mode: an optional grid recreates the look of the period screen, for those bothered by the overly smooth rendering of a modern panel.
  • Protective lens: a pre-cut lens is supplied in the chosen colour; the "No lens" variant is intended for those reusing their own.

What it doesn't do

  • It cannot be fitted without opening the console: full disassembly, Y1 tri-wing screwdriver required, and handling of a fragile ribbon cable.
  • It does not increase the resolution of games: the Game Boy Advance displays 240 × 160 pixels, before and after.
  • It is not suitable for the Game Boy Advance SP, the Game Boy Color or the Game Boy Micro: this kit is designed for the AGB-001 model only.
  • It does not improve battery life: a backlit screen uses more power than the original panel.
  • It is not a console or a plug-and-play replacement screen: it is a spare part, supplied without games.

Compatibility

First-generation Game Boy Advance, model AGB-001, the horizontal console with a non-backlit screen. Not covered: Game Boy Advance SP (AGS-001 and AGS-101), Game Boy Micro, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Pocket, or Android or Linux handheld consoles. The "IPS-ready" replacement shells in our catalogue accept this panel format; an unmodified original shell may need a slight adjustment of the internal frame depending on the thickness of the lens used.

Skill level required

Intermediate level. You need to open the console with a Y1 tri-wing screwdriver, remove the motherboard, take out the original screen and then connect the kit's ribbon cable. Depending on the version of control board supplied, one or two solder points may be needed to control brightness from a button on the console. Have a plastic spudger, fine tweezers and a clear work surface ready: the ribbon cable can be folded once, not twice. If you have never opened a console before, start with one whose motherboard you don't mind risking.

In the box

  • 1 IPS screen, 2.9 inches, with its ribbon cable and control board
  • 1 pre-cut protective lens in the chosen colour — except for the "No lens" variant

No tools, shell or console: these items are ordered separately.

The idea: an AGB-001 you can finally read

The 2001 Game Boy Advance was sold with a reflective panel: without a well-angled lamp, the image disappears. It's the first flaw anyone mentions when they dig the console out of a box. This kit replaces that panel with a backlit 2.9-inch IPS screen, the same size as the factory screen. Once fitted, the console can be used on the sofa in the evening, in the car, on a train — where it used to be unusable.

The part: original size and pixel mode

Two details set this kit apart from cheap IPS panels. The first is the size: 2.9 inches, the dimensions of the factory screen, which means you don't have to enlarge the shell window with a file or craft knife. The second is pixel mode, an optional grid that recreates the look of the period panel when the smooth rendering of a modern screen bothers you. A pre-cut protective lens comes with each colour.

What you need to know before ordering

This is a spare part, not a plug-in accessory. You need to open the console with a Y1 tri-wing screwdriver, take out the motherboard and handle a ribbon cable that can only be folded once. Depending on the control board supplied, one or two solder points may be needed to control brightness from a button. If this is your first disassembly, allow an hour and a clear work surface; our French-speaking customer service replies within 1 business day.

Frequently Asked Questions

🔧 Do I need to solder to install this screen?

The main connection is made via ribbon cable, without a soldering iron. Depending on the version of control board supplied, one or two solder points may be needed if you want to control brightness from a button on the console rather than via the touch contact. In any case, expect an intermediate level of disassembly.

🎮 Which consoles is it compatible with?

Only the first-generation Game Boy Advance, model AGB-001, the horizontal console with a non-backlit screen. The Game Boy Advance SP (AGS-001 and AGS-101), Game Boy Micro and Game Boy Color are not covered: the panel format and ribbon cable are different.

✂️ Do I need to cut the shell?

The 2.9-inch panel matches the size of the original screen, so the shell window doesn't need to be enlarged. Depending on the thickness of the lens you fit, a slight adjustment of the internal frame may still be needed. The "IPS-ready" shells in our catalogue are already designed for this format.

🖥️ What is pixel mode for?

A modern IPS panel displays the Game Boy Advance's 240 × 160 pixels perfectly smoothly, which changes how period games look. Pixel mode reintroduces a grid between the pixels to recreate the look of the original panel. It can be switched on or off; it's a matter of taste.

📦 What's in the box?

A 2.9-inch IPS screen with its ribbon cable and control board, plus a pre-cut protective lens in the chosen colour. The "No lens" variant is supplied without this lens, for those reusing their own or who already have a shell with a lens. No tools, shell, console or games.

🧰 What tools do I need and how long does it take?

A Y1 tri-wing screwdriver for the shell, a Phillips screwdriver for the motherboard, a plastic spudger and fine tweezers. Allow thirty to sixty minutes if you have opened a console before, longer the first time. The screen's ribbon cable won't survive being folded twice: take your time.

🚚 What are the delivery times?

Delivery in 10 to 18 days · ships within 3 to 5 days.

🛡️ Which guarantee applies?

2-year legal guarantee of conformity and 14-day returns. Our French-speaking customer service replies within 1 business day. The guarantee covers the part received, not damage caused to the console during installation.
