Description complète
28-pin FRAM memory chip: the save that survives a dead battery
On an arcade board or a retro project, saved data depends on a lithium battery soldered in thirty years ago. The day it gives out, settings, high scores and configuration go with it. FRAM is non-volatile memory that retains data without a battery and is written at SRAM speed: it is the component fitted in place of the original memory in so-called battery-less mods.
What it does
- Retains data without power: no lithium battery, no backup capacitor to keep an eye on, no save lost after months in storage.
- Writes like an SRAM: immediate parallel access, with no write cycle or programming sequence as on an EEPROM or Flash, and with far higher write endurance.
- Three part numbers to choose from: FM1808-70 (5 V, 32 K × 8), FM18W08 (2.7 to 5.5 V, 32 K × 8), FM16W08 (2.7 to 5.5 V, 64 K × 8). Order the one your board expects.
What it doesn't do
- It is not a bypass chip: it is a standard memory component, with no embedded software and no unlocking function.
- It cannot be fitted without soldering: a 28-pin surface-mount component, supplied bare, with no socket or adapter board.
- It does not recover a save that has already been lost: after replacement, the board restarts with blank memory that must be reconfigured.
- The supplier states an SSOP-28 package while the original listing says SOP-28: the exact package width remains to be confirmed, so compare your board's footprint before ordering.
- The manufacturer and markings are not guaranteed: component of Chinese origin, sold without a certificate of authenticity.
Compatibility
Intended for boards that use a battery-backed 28-pin parallel memory: arcade boards, retro computing builds, DIY projects. Compatibility is checked against your board's schematic, with the pinout and supply voltage to hand. Does not replace an I²C or SPI serial memory, a program EPROM or Flash, or a through-hole DIP-28 package: the format sold here is a surface-mount package.
Skill level required
Experienced. You need to desolder the original chip and fit the new one: hot air station or fine-tip iron, flux, desoldering braid, isopropyl alcohol and an anti-static wrist strap. A magnifier or stereo microscope helps a lot with a 28-pin pitch. If you have never done SMD work, practise on a scrap board before touching yours.

The job: taking the battery out of the circuit
An arcade board that loses its settings every time the power goes off almost always has the same problem: the lithium battery that powered its memory is flat, if it hasn't leaked onto the traces. Replacing the battery only postpones the problem by a few years. Fitting an FRAM in place of the original memory removes the battery from the circuit: the board keeps its data on its own, even after months in storage.
The part: why FRAM and not EEPROM
FRAM behaves like RAM: the circuit writes to it immediately, without waiting for a programming cycle and without any special sequence, something an EEPROM or Flash cannot do. It also withstands an incomparably higher number of writes. Three part numbers are available: FM1808-70 at 5 V, FM18W08 and FM16W08 with a wide 2.7 to 5.5 V voltage range, the latter offering twice the capacity. Always follow the part number your board expects.
The limit: what we tell you before you buy
This is a bare component, surface-soldered across 28 pins: without a hot air station or fine-tip iron, the job is out of the question. The package is stated as SSOP-28 by the supplier while the original listing mentions SOP-28: compare your board's footprint before ordering. Finally, the manufacturer is not guaranteed and the chip arrives blank: a save that has already been lost will not come back.

Frequently Asked Questions
🔧 Do I need to solder to fit this chip?
Yes. It is a 28-pin surface-mount component: you need to desolder the original memory and then fit this one, with a hot air station or a fine-tip iron with flux and braid. No socket or adapter is included.
🔋 Why replace the original memory with FRAM?
Because FRAM retains data without power. The lithium battery that kept the memory alive becomes unnecessary, and with it the risk of leakage onto the traces.
🎮 Which boards can it be used on?
On boards that use a battery-backed 28-pin parallel memory: arcade boards, retro computing, DIY builds. Check against your board's schematic, with the pinout and voltage to hand.
🧩 Which part number should I choose?
FM1808-70-SG at 5 V (32 K x 8), FM18W08-SG at 2.7 to 5.5 V (32 K x 8), FM16W08-SG at 2.7 to 5.5 V (64 K x 8). Follow the part number given in your board's documentation rather than the highest capacity.
🚫 Is it a modchip?
No. It is a standard memory component, with no embedded software and no protection bypass function.
📦 What's in the box?
One 28-pin FRAM memory chip, in the part number chosen. It is sold individually, with no cable or printed documentation.
🚚 What are the delivery times?
Delivery in 10 to 18 days, ships within 3 to 5 days.
🛡️ What guarantee applies?
2-year legal guarantee of conformity. 14-day returns. French-speaking customer service, reply within 1 business day.
