Description complète
Electrolytic capacitor kit: enough to recap an entire board
On machines from the 80s and 90s, capacitors dry out, swell, then leak and eat away at the traces. The fault shows up as crackling sound, a shaky picture or a console that no longer starts. This kit brings together through-hole radial capacitors from 0.1 to 1000 µF, at 16, 25 and 50 V, all rated for 105 °C: so you have the right value to hand when it's time to recap, without reordering part by part.
What it does
- A wide range of values: from 0.1 µF to 1000 µF, spread across 10, 15 or 24 values depending on the pack chosen.
- Three rated voltages: 16 V, 25 V and 50 V, the three you come across most often on a console or arcade board.
- 105 °C models: more durable than the original 85 °C parts, useful near a regulator or heatsink.
- Assortment sorted by value: take what you need and keep the rest for the next project.
What it doesn't do
- These are capacitors with through-hole leads, not surface-mount components: they are not suitable for all-SMD boards, where the capacitors are soldered flat.
- This is not a kit dedicated to a specific console. There is no guarantee that all the values for a given board are included, or in sufficient quantity: make your list before ordering.
- No voltage above 50 V: mains power supply units and high-voltage switching stages are not covered.
- The kit does not replace tantalum, ceramic or film capacitors.
- No soldering iron, braid or desoldering pump: tools are not included.
Compatibility
Any through-hole circuit board whose values are in the assortment: 8-bit and 16-bit consoles and microcomputers, arcade boards, linear power supplies, vintage amps and monitors. What is not covered: fully surface-mount boards (handheld consoles and machines from later generations), and any value or voltage not in the assortment. Check the markings on your original capacitors — capacitance in µF and voltage in V — before ordering.
Skill level required
Soldering required, intermediate level. You need to desolder each original capacitor without lifting a pad, then solder in the new one observing polarity: the light stripe on the body marks the negative lead. Have a temperature-controlled iron, braid or a desoldering pump, isopropyl alcohol to clean off flux and a multimeter to check afterwards. Identical capacitance and a voltage equal to or higher than the original: never the other way round.

The job: bringing a tired board back to life
An electrolytic capacitor ages even when switched off: the electrolyte dries out, the capacitance collapses and the seal eventually gives way. On a thirty-year-old machine, this means crackling sound, a shaky picture, a console that refuses to start, and sometimes brown stains around the leads. A recap means replacing these parts before the leak attacks the copper traces. It is the most cost-effective maintenance job in retro gaming: a few tens of cents' worth of components saves a board that is no longer manufactured.
The part: 105 °C and through-hole leads
This assortment covers 0.1 to 1000 µF at 16, 25 and 50 V, the three voltages you come across most on a console or arcade board. All models are rated for 105 °C, giving a higher thermal margin than the 85 °C parts fitted originally — welcome near a regulator or heatsink. The leads are radial and through-hole: you solder them with an iron, with no hot air station or lab equipment. Buying an assortment works out much cheaper than ordering value by value, and the leftovers serve for the next project.
The limit to know before ordering
An assorted kit is not a recap kit dedicated to a specific model: nothing guarantees that all the values on your board are included, or in sufficient quantity. Note the markings on each original capacitor — capacitance in µF, voltage in V — and compare them with the list of values for the pack chosen. Fully surface-mount boards are out of scope: these components are through-hole. And the job requires knowing how to desolder cleanly, without lifting a pad. If that is not the case for you, start with a board of no value before touching the console.

Frequently Asked Questions
🔧 Do I need to solder to use this kit?
Yes. You need to desolder the original capacitor and then solder in the new one observing polarity. A temperature-controlled iron and desoldering braid are all you need: this is standard through-hole soldering, not SMD.
🎮 Which machines are these capacitors suitable for?
Any through-hole board whose values are in the assortment: 8-bit and 16-bit consoles and microcomputers, arcade boards, linear power supplies, vintage amps and monitors. Fully surface-mount boards are not covered.
🔍 How do I know which value to choose?
Note the markings printed on the original capacitor: the capacitance in µF and the voltage in V. Replace with identical capacitance and equal or higher voltage — never lower.
📦 What's in the box?
A single pack, the one chosen when ordering: 120 pieces in 10 values, 200 pieces in 15 values, or 500 pieces in 24 values. 105 °C aluminium electrolytic capacitors, at 16, 25 and 50 V.
🧰 What tools do I need?
A temperature-controlled soldering iron, braid or a desoldering pump, solder, isopropyl alcohol to clean off flux, and a multimeter to check afterwards. None of these are included with the kit.
⏱️ How long does a recap take?
Allow one to three hours for a board with around twenty capacitors, including disassembly and cleaning. The longest part is not the soldering but identifying the values and polarity.
🚚 What are the delivery times?
Delivery in 10 to 18 days, ships within 3 to 5 days.
🛡️ What guarantee applies?
2-year legal guarantee of conformity. 14-day returns. French-speaking customer service, reply within 1 business day.
