Complete DS Lite shell: a scratched console looks presentable again
A DS Lite from 2006 almost always has the same story: cracked hinge, yellowed plastic, scratches on the lid, a bottom shell marked by twenty years of backpacks. The electronics, however, still work. This complete replacement housing lets you transfer the motherboard into a new shell, with no soldering at all, while keeping your original console and its games.
What it does
- Replaces the entire housing: top half, bottom half and screen frame, instead of gluing a broken hinge back together.
- No soldering: the job is a transfer of the motherboard and ribbon cables, not work with an iron.
- Five colours: clear, blue, black, red and pink, to restore it to original condition or give it a new look.
What it doesn't do
- It is only a shell: no screen, ribbon cable, battery, motherboard or speakers are supplied. Everything is reused from your console.
- It does not repair a faulty console. A dead screen, a severed electrical hinge or a faulty card slot will still be faulty after reassembly.
- It is not an original manufacturer part: screw fit and plastic shade may differ slightly from the factory housing.
- Taking a DS Lite apart remains delicate — fragile screen ribbon cables, Wi-Fi antenna wire to feed back through the hinge. It is not an ideal first teardown.
Compatibility
Designed for the Nintendo DS Lite (model USG-001, also known as NDSL). Not compatible with the original DS "Phat" (NTR-001), DSi, DSi XL, 2DS or any 3DS model: these machines have completely different chassis.
Skill level required
Intermediate. No soldering, no cutting, but a full teardown: unscrewing tri-wing and Phillips screws, disconnecting the screen and touchscreen ribbon cables, feeding the antenna wire through the hinge, then reassembly. You will need a Y00 tri-wing screwdriver, a PH000 Phillips, a plastic spudger and fine tweezers. Work on a well-lit surface, with a screw tray: the DS Lite has a lot of them, in different lengths.

The job: making a DS Lite presentable again
The DS Lite has lived in backpacks and jacket pockets for twenty years. The white plastic has yellowed, the lid is scratched, and the left hinge often ends up cracking at the screw. Inside, though, everything still works. Replacing the housing rather than the console means keeping the same motherboard, the same screens and the same cartridge collection, in a chassis that no longer crumbles.
The part: a complete housing, not a half shell
Many listings only sell the top lid, which leaves a two-tone console and a hinge that is still worn out. Here, the whole assembly is replaced: top half, bottom half and screen frame, in the same colour. This is a compatible part, not an original manufacturer part: the shade and the tightness of the screws may differ slightly from the factory housing.
The limit: what to know before unscrewing
No soldering is needed, but fully taking apart a DS Lite requires a methodical approach. You need a Y00 tri-wing screwdriver and a PH000 Phillips, must disconnect the screen and touchscreen ribbon cables without bending them, and feed the Wi-Fi antenna wire back through the hinge. Allow an hour without rushing, a screw tray, and a console whose electronic condition you already know.
