Cordless rotary mini tool: shell touch-ups without a workbench

Fitting an IPS screen in a handheld console almost always means enlarging the shell window, deburring an edge or clearing a tab. This rotary tool runs on a built-in 3.6 V battery, charges via USB and sits in your hand like a pen: you work the part on the corner of a table, not on a workbench.

What it does

• Shell touch-ups: enlarge a screen opening, tidy up a cut edge, deburr ABS plastic after using a craft knife.
• Cordless: built-in battery and USB cable charging, no mains adapter or extension lead to drag to your work surface.
• Versatile: light drilling, sanding, brushing and polishing depending on the accessory fitted, on plastic, wood, resin and soft metals.
• Four options: tool only, or a kit of 24, 75 or 361 accessories depending on what you already have in your toolbox.

What it doesn't do

• It's not a straight-cutting tool: to open a screen window cleanly, you mark and cut with a craft knife or template; the rotary tool is only for finishing and deburring.
• 3.6 V brushed motor: limited torque, designed for plastic and soft materials. It won't drill steel and doesn't replace a bench drill.
• Doesn't replace a soldering iron: no electronics work is possible with this tool.
• The manufacturer doesn't publish the piece-by-piece contents of the 24, 75 and 361-accessory kits, or the exact rotation speed: we don't list them rather than make them up.
• No variable speed setting is advertised by the manufacturer.

Compatibility

Generic tool: it doesn't connect to any console, it works the material. Common uses in the retro workshop — shells for Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP, Game Boy Color, PSP, Nintendo DS, Anbernic or Retroid handheld console shells, ABS sheets, wood, resin and soft metals. It is not suitable for steel, stainless steel or tempered glass.

Skill level required

No soldering. The technique, however, takes practice: a rotary tool removes material fast and there's no going back. Always try it out on a spare shell before touching the part you want to keep. Wear safety glasses and a dust mask, and use a clamp or a light vice to hold the shell — a part held in your hand will slip. Work in short passes: ABS melts if you stay in the same spot.
