Description complète
Atari 7800+: the 1986 console, connected over HDMI
The Atari 7800+ is the official re-release of the Atari 7800, at 80% of its original size. It plays 7800 and 2600 cartridges, original and third-party alike, and displays them over HDMI, in 4:3 or 16:9. In the box: the CX78+ wireless controller, a recreation of the two-button pad sold with the 7800 in Europe, and the brand-new cartridge Bentley Bear's Crystal Quest, a sequel to Crystal Castles.
What it does
- Plays 7800 and 2600 cartridges: original and third-party, as well as the new Atari cartridges.
- CX78+ wireless controller included: D-pad topped with a small removable stick, two buttons, battery rechargeable via USB-C.
- Bentley Bear's Crystal Quest cartridge: a brand-new 7800 game, sequel to Crystal Castles.
- HDMI output: cable included, choice of 4:3 or 16:9 display.
- DB9 controller ports: original Atari joysticks and CX40+ joysticks plug straight in.
What it doesn't do
- It is not an original vintage console: cartridges are run through emulation (ProSystem for the 7800, Stella for the 2600), and not all 2600 cartridges are compatible.
- The USB power adapter is not included, only the USB-C cable.
- Only one controller included: two-player games require a second controller or a joystick, sold separately.
- No USB port: you cannot plug in an off-the-shelf USB controller.
- No mid-game saves or rewind: you play just like in 1986.
- The CX78+ controller has no Pause or Reset buttons: they are on the console.
Compatibility
Original Atari 7800 and Atari 2600 cartridges, third-party games included, and new Atari cartridges. Some 2600 cartridges are not compatible. HDMI TV or monitor. Controllers and joysticks with a DB9 connector, including original Atari models. Powered via USB-C cable, USB power adapter not included.
Getting started

The 7800 and the 2600 in a single console
The Atari 7800 had one special feature: it also played 2600 cartridges. The 7800+ keeps this dual compatibility and adds HDMI output, in 4:3 or 16:9. Original 7800 and 2600 cartridges, third-party ones included, find their way back onto a modern TV, alongside the new cartridges released by Atari.
The European '80s pad, minus the cable
In Europe, the 7800 was sold with a two-button pad rather than a joystick. The CX78+ recreates it in a wireless version: D-pad topped with a small removable stick, two buttons, battery rechargeable via USB-C. Its adapter plugs into the DB9 port, the same port used by original Atari joysticks.
A new game in the box
The 7800+ doesn't arrive empty-handed: it comes with Bentley Bear's Crystal Quest, a brand-new 7800 cartridge that continues Crystal Castles. Beyond that, the console runs on cartridges, vintage or recent. It works through emulation, with no mid-game saves or rewind: you play just like in 1986.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, most of them: the 7800+ plays 7800 and 2600 cartridges. It runs through emulation, and some 2600 cartridges are not compatible.
🎮 Is the controller really wireless?
Yes. The CX78+ communicates with a wireless adapter plugged into the console's DB9 controller port. Its battery recharges via USB-C cable; the manufacturer states around 25 hours of battery life.
📦 Which game is included?
The Bentley Bear's Crystal Quest cartridge, a brand-new 7800 game that follows on from Crystal Castles. Other cartridges are sold separately.
🔌 Is the power adapter included?
No. The USB-C cable is included, the USB power adapter is not.
👥 Can two people play?
Yes, with a second CX78+ controller, a CX40+ joystick or an original Atari controller with a DB9 connector, sold separately. The console has no USB port for an off-the-shelf controller.
🆚 What is the difference from the Atari 2600+?
Both play 2600 and 7800 cartridges. The 7800+ takes the look of the 7800 and comes with the CX78+ two-button wireless controller; the 2600+ takes that of the 2600, with a one-button CX40+ joystick.
