Description complète
8BitDo Retro 18: a mechanical numeric keypad that is also a calculator
The Retro 18 is a standalone numeric keypad with 18 Kailh Box White V2 mechanical keys on a hot-swap PCB, topped by a nine-digit seven-segment LED display. It works as a numeric keypad plugged into your PC, or as a standalone calculator sitting on your desk. Four retro finishes in the manufacturer's line-up.
What it does
- Two modes: numeric keypad for PC, or standalone calculator with its own nine-digit display.
- Kailh Box White V2 switches on a hot-swap PCB: the switches are changed by hand, without a soldering iron.
- Three connections: Bluetooth 5.0, 2.4 GHz wireless with the included adapter, or wired USB.
- 1000 mAh: 160 hours of use claimed for 4 hours of charging.
- A dedicated key opens the Windows Calculator app.
- Dye-sublimated PBT keycaps on the N, Fami and M editions; double-shot ABS on the C64 edition.
What it doesn't do
- This is not a full keyboard. Eighteen keys: the number block and its operators, nothing more. It sits beside a keyboard, it does not replace one.
- macOS is not in the compatibility stated by the manufacturer, which lists Windows 10 (1903) and above and Android 9.0 and above.
- The shortcut key opens the Windows calculator: on Android, that shortcut has no equivalent.
- The switches are supplied fitted: hot-swap lets you replace them, but there are no spare switches in the box.
- The finishes are the manufacturer's own: no customisation when ordering.
Compatibility
Stated by the manufacturer for Windows 10 (1903) and above and Android 9.0 and above, over Bluetooth 5.0, 2.4 GHz wireless or wired USB. Calculator mode works without a computer, on the device's own battery alone. macOS is not stated.
Getting started
No soldering, no disassembly. Plug in the USB cable or the 2.4 GHz adapter, or pair over Bluetooth, and the keypad is recognised as a standard keyboard. Switching between numeric keypad mode and calculator mode is done on the device. To change a switch, all you need is a keycap puller and a switch puller.

A desk object, not just a peripheral
Most compact keyboards drop the number pad to save space, and you end up plugging one back in anyway. It may as well have some style. The Retro 18 borrows the look of 1980s machines — dye-sublimated keycaps, seven-segment display, beige or pencil-line shell depending on the edition — and sits on the desk as an object in its own right.
Hot-swap: change the switches by hand
The Kailh Box White V2 switches fitted at the factory click sharply, which some people will love and others won't. Since the PCB is hot-swap, that disagreement is settled without a soldering iron: pull the keycap, pull the switch, drop in another one. Eighteen switches to change is a matter of a few minutes.
Calculator mode: it works without a computer
This is the feature you won't find elsewhere. In calculator mode, the Retro 18 needs nothing but its own battery: the nine-digit display takes over and the keys act as operators. On a PC, a dedicated key also opens the Windows Calculator app.
