Game Gear IPS screen kit: a sharp picture on a bigger screen
The original Game Gear screen is blurry, faint and power-hungry. This kit replaces it with a 3.5-inch laminated IPS panel at 640 × 480, 16% larger than the original screen. Three versions: the kit alone, the kit with a no-cut shell, or the kit with shell and USB-C rechargeable battery.
What it does
- Sharp, bright picture: 640 × 480 IPS panel with laminated glass, 178° viewing angle, 15 brightness levels.
- On-screen settings: menu opened with Start + 1 + 2, retro effects (pixel grid, horizontal or vertical scanlines), 8 colour modes, adjustable picture position.
- Three picture formats: full screen, original size or reduced size.
- Battery version: two 7.4 V 1500 mAh cells, USB-C charging, over-voltage, over-current and short-circuit protection.
What it does not do
- The kit alone does not fit the original shell without cutting: choose a version with shell to avoid it.
- It does not work on Majesco Game Gear VA4 and VA5, or on main boards marked "MADE IN TAIWAN".
- It does not replace the console's capacitors: a tired board still needs work.
- Console not included.
Compatibility
Single-chip main boards: revisions 837-9130, 837-9024 and 837-8560. Dual-chip main boards: 837-7996, 837-7719-01 VA0, 837-7398-03 and 837-7398-01. The revision number is printed on the main board: check it before ordering.
Skill level
Experienced: remove the original screen, two fuses and one resistor, solder a few wires to the main board, connect the ribbon cable. You will need a Phillips screwdriver, a fine-tip iron and flush cutters. Without the shell versions, the window of the original shell must be cut.

The job: the Game Gear we wished for in 1991
Remove the original screen, take out two fuses and one resistor, solder a few wires and connect the ribbon cable. At power-up, the picture is sharp, bright and readable from any angle, without the smearing of the period screen.
The part: a laminated, adjustable IPS panel
The 3.5-inch 640 × 480 panel is laminated to its glass, which removes internal reflections. A menu opened with Start + 1 + 2 adjusts brightness, colour, format and retro effects. The battery version replaces the AA cells with two cells recharged over USB-C.
Support: choosing the right version
